How to get your first graduate job

Googling “how to get your first grad job” repeatedly? We’ve all been there. Getting your first graduate job is a rite of passage that can often seem very, very difficult.

Here are some useful tips to help those of you looking for an entry-level role in the creative, marketing, digital and PR industry.

How to get your first graduate job

Get in front of people online

Connect with people in the industry through LinkedIn, the overwhelming majority of people in the industry use LinkedIn. Contact us and ask to chat, share your CV, get advice. People in the industry want to help and you will stand out if you get into the industry before you graduate. Try to get a meeting or even a video call with people, show them your work, and be sure to follow up to ask if there are any placement opportunities. When placing yourself, make yourself indispensable, always think about how you can make life easier for others, and they will want you to stay! Here’s how to succeed in your placement.

Participate in initiatives such as Two + Two

Two + Two is an annual collaboration and competition hosted by Creative Resource. The event brings together marketing and creative students with numerous mentors from more than 25 agencies, to tackle a brief in the name of a social cause. Participants made great contacts and secured great jobs and internships.

This initiative gives you the chance to understand which areas of the creative industry interest you most in practice, opens the door to excellent contacts and many prizes include agency internships and mentorships.

Network

Take the time to look for networking opportunities within your industry. Get on social media and check out groups for graphic design in Manchester, marketing in Liverpool, etc. and see what you can find. Check out our Creative Resources Events page where we share events we are hosting, attending, or think others should attend.

Meet others and get in front of the people you want to talk to, without having to send that intimidating email. Make sure to be yourself, have fun and remember that everyone is in this together. While it’s nice to know who you’d like to talk to, remember to try to step out of your comfort zone and meet people who work in different professions and have studied different degrees, as this could lead to opportunities you never imagined before.

It may be difficult at first, but it’s important to try to attend events on your own. If you attend networking events with colleagues or friends, the tendency is to stick together, so while it can be intimidating at first, it can be helpful to go alone. This will be helpful because you will be able to talk to new people and have these conversations

Be sure to follow up and continue these conversations via email or social media platforms like LinkedIn.

Talk to recruiters

Recruiters understand the job market and know exactly what employers are looking for. Join LinkedIn and connect with a few recruiters in your chosen industry and ask them to keep you in mind for any graduate positions, giving them some brief details about your background and desired roles.

Attend portfolio review evenings

Keep your eyes peeled for one of our portfolio review evenings, where over 100 students, graduates and early to mid-career people have their portfolios reviewed by creative professionals from some of the North’s best agencies. Essentially, it’s like speed dating for your career. You spend 5 minutes with someone at an agency talking about your portfolio and what’s best to do with it, then when your 5 minutes are up, a horn sounds and you move on to the next reviewer. In 90 minutes, you should be able to have your portfolio reviewed by several experts. We have seen lasting connections made, as well as job and placement offers. Always one of our favorite evenings.

We wish you good luck in finding your first graduate position. If you need help, take a moment or two to view our latest job postings or via our contact page.
